Eliza Boom is a Munich-based lyric soprano, noted for her versatility of musical style and repertoire, and her commitment to character in performance. Eliza has a natural affinity with the German repertoire, particularly the music of Richard Strauss. A former member of the Bayerische Staatsoper Opera Studio, Eliza now works as a guest artist at opera houses across Europe.
Eliza grew up on the stage, singing folk and gospel music with her family in churches across New Zealand. After learning piano and voice during school years, Eliza decided to make singing her career and completed a Bachelor of Music at Vision College (2014), focusing on classical singing while also developing versatility in musical theatre and pop music. Her training then took her to the University of Waikato, where she studied post-graduate qualifications under Dame Malvina Major (2016). Since beginning her training, she has won many awards at singing competitions across Australasia and Europe. Passionate about passing on knowledge and experience, during her years of tertiary study Eliza developed a teaching studio, providing singing, piano and music theory training to students of a variety of ages at home, schools and Vision College.
2017 saw Eliza as a Dame Malvina Major Scholar with New Zealand Opera, performing in their mainstage productions, after which she moved to Manchester, England to study a Master of Music in Performance and later on the International Artist Diploma with soprano Mary Plazas at the Royal Northern College of Music. While at the RNCM, Eliza sang the roles of Nella (Gianni Schicchi), Gertrude (Hansel and Gretel), Noémie (Cendrillon), and covered the title role in Suor Angelica. In 2019 she debuted the role of Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) at Clonter Opera. Eliza then trained at the National Opera Studio in London (2019/20), supported by the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, Drake Calleja Trust, and Tait Memorial Trust. During her time with the National Opera Studio, she performed operatic scenes in collaboration with Welsh National Opera and Opera North.
From 2020-23 Eliza was employed at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich as a member of the Opera Studio and Ensemble. Here she performed many roles on the mainstage, such as Woglinde (Das Rheingold), Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte), and Berta (Il Barbiere di Siviglia). She has also covered the roles of Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes), Micaëla (Carmen), and the title role in Giuditta. During her time at the Bayerische Staatsoper, she performed the Soprano role in the world premiere of Miroslav Srnka's opera Singularity and was the soloist for the German premiere of Buch der Körper, a composition for soprano and ensemble by Vito Žuraj, under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski.
Eliza's concert repertoire includes Vier letzte Lieder (R. Strauss), Ein Deutsches Requiem (Brahms), Mahler's Symphony No. 4, and a variety of Lieder recital programmes, collaborating with orchestras such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Nottingham Philharmonic, and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. As a freelance artist, she has worked with Stuttgart Staatsoper, the Royal Danish Opera, Staatsoper Hannover, Badisches Staatstheater and Royal Theater Carré.
