Eliza Boom is a Hamburg-based lyric soprano, noted for her versatility of musical style and repertoire, and her commitment to character in performance. Eliza has a natural affinity with the German repertoire, particularly the music of Richard Strauss. A former member of the Bayerische Staatsoper Opera Studio, she now enjoys a career as a guest artist of opera houses across Europe, with noted successes as Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Pat Nixon (Nixon in China), Vitellia (La Clemenza di Tito), and Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel). Since embarking on her career, Eliza has won many awards across Australasia and Europe, including the Elizabeth Connell Prize, the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award, and the CulturArte Prize at Operalia. From the 2025/26 season, Eliza will be a member of the Hamburg State Opera, singing roles such as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), and Jungfrau (Das Paradies und die Peri).
Eliza grew up on the stage, singing folk and gospel music with her family in churches across New Zealand. After learning piano and voice during school years, Eliza decided to make singing her career and completed a Bachelor of Music at Vision College (2014), focusing on classical singing while also developing versatility in musical theatre and pop music. Deciding to prioritise her operatic training, she then went to the University of Waikato, where she studied post-graduate qualifications under Dame Malvina Major (2015-16).
In 2017, Eliza moved to Manchester, England to study a Master of Music in Performance and subsequently an International Artist Diploma with soprano Mary Plazas at the Royal Northern College of Music. To further her development, she then moved to London to train at the National Opera Studio in London (2019/20), supported by the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, Drake Calleja Trust, and Tait Memorial Trust.
From 2020-23 Eliza was employed at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich as a member of the Opera Studio and Ensemble. Here she performed numerous roles on the mainstage, such as Woglinde (Das Rheingold), Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte), Nella (Gianni Schicchi), and Berta (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), alongside covering the roles of Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes), Micaëla (Carmen), and the title role in Giuditta. Not shy of modern compositions, during her time at the Bayerische Staatsoper Eliza originated the Soprano role in the world premiere of Miroslav Srnka's opera Singularity and was the soloist for the German premiere of Buch der Körper, a composition for soprano and ensemble by Vito Žuraj, under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski.
Since beginning her freelance career in Europe, Eliza has worked with the Opéra National de Paris, Stuttgart Staatsoper, the Royal Danish Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Staatsoper Hannover, Badisches Staatstheater and Royal Theater Carré. She is also an experienced concert artist, having collaborated with orchestras such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Badische Staatskapelle, and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra on a variety of repertoire, including Vier letzte Lieder (R. Strauss), Lyrische Symphonie (Zemlinsky), Mahler's 2nd Symphony, and Ein Deutsches Requiem (Brahms).
